A probiotic supplement promises to treat eczema and atopic dermatitis in a new way.

ProZema combines three patented strains: Bifidobacterium lactis CECT 8145, Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347 and Lactobacillus casei CECT 9104.

The company says that, together, those probiotics have antioxidant properties, anti-inflammatory characteristics and increase microbiome diversity. ProZema is recommended for ages four and up.

systematic review and meta-analysis of probiotics for atopic dermatitis published in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology in 2020 found that these three strains were among the top in terms of efficacy, with “high certainty evidence” behind it reducing topic dermatitis symptoms compared with placebo.

That followed a randomized trial published in 2018 that compared taking the three probiotic strains together against taking a placebo. It recruited 50 children between four and 17 years old who had moderate atopic dermatitis. The study’s participants had all been prescribed topical steroids. (It also required that all the children be consuming a high-quality Mediterranean diet—which was probably made easier by the fact that it was done in Spain). It found that people who took the probiotic improved in the SCORAD index more than those who took the placebo. It also found that the probiotic group was less likely to use corticosteroids to treat flare-ups.

The product comes in a tasteless and odourless powder, and can be mixed into cold food or drinks. It’s packaged in 30 individual sticks per box.
